A wedding gift for the ages…
These were my wedding gift to Terry.
2 rocking chairs.
Terry and I first married on 07.07.07, and on our 13-year-anniversary (a Tuesday afternoon), we re-married. There’s nothing immediately symbolic about a Tuesday, but the gift I picked for my ex-husband (aka first husband) is one that will suit us for all of the big days and all of the Tuesdays in between, forevermore.
We always said we were going to grow old together.
We said we would be sitting side by side in our rocking chairs as we watched our children grow up and then one day as we watched our grandchildren.
And then we prepared ourselves that at one point, it would be still and quiet and simply just he and I left ... alone in these chairs side by side.
Possibly many times with not much to say.
But when you have found your person you can endure with.
When you’ve found your person you’re willing to walk through hell and back to keep fighting for; even when the flames are surrounding you and quite frankly, it just becomes too much.
When you’ve found your person you’re comfortable sitting in silence beside, even though they know all your deepest secrets and wounds and flaws ... and they still love you.
They - still - choose - you.
That is your person you want to be rocking beside until, well - as long as the good Lord permits.
Terry, I had looked high and low at rocking chairs for us. Some “new” ones in person to pick up. Some “new” ones online to order. Some that needed put together; others that needed assembled. Some “fake” pretty wood chairs that didn’t seem quite right. Then I found these “real” rockers that had endured and yet still stood strong.
I had them specially refinished as they suited us perfectly.
15 years together - 15 hard, somewhat broken, somewhat messy and painful, and yet all the while filled with His love and His grace and His forgiveness.
Here’s to spending every last day of mine on this earth with you, and to lots of rocking in these chairs side by side.
